D&R Custom Steel Inc. will expand Steel Fabrication to Produce Cutting-Edge Craftsmanship with Industry 4.0 Technologies

DURHAM REGION — The Ontario government is welcoming an investment of $4,471,158 by D&R Custom Steel Inc. to grow its workforce of 65 in the Riding of Durham as they adopt new advanced processes and relocate to a larger facility. The investment was announced today by Todd McCarthy, Member of Provincial Parliament for Durham.

“By supporting strategic investments from regional businesses, our government is protecting Ontario’s workers and creating the conditions for a strong, stable, and resilient economy that can weather any storm,” said MPP Todd McCarthy. “D&R Custom Steel’s investment will support growth and innovation across the local manufacturing sector and create more well-paying jobs for workers and families in Bowmanville.”

With this investment, D&R Custom Steel Inc. will expand its operations by moving its existing Pickering facility to a new purpose-built plant in Bowmanville. This advanced manufacturing process and passivation metal washing bays will allow D&R Custom Steel to conduct this crucial metal surface treatment process in-house and on a larger scale, eliminating the need to outsource these processes to U.S. companies and reduce production lead times.

“Employing more than 800,000 workers across the province, Ontario’s manufacturing sector is the economic engine of our nation,” said Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “Our government is proud to support local companies like D&R Custom Steel Inc. as they expand their operations, and we thank them for their contributions to Ontario’s dynamic and growing manufacturing ecosystem.”

In support of this investment, the government is providing D&R Custom Steel Inc. with $670,674 in AMIC Loan funding through the Regional Development Program.

“The Government of Ontario’s support through the Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Competitiveness (AMIC) stream is a significant catalyst for D&R Custom Steel’s continued growth in Durham Region,” said Dan Engelage, President, D&R Custom Steel Inc. “This funding enables us to invest in advanced manufacturing processes and expand our capabilities in the production of stainless-steel environmental equipment for water and air treatment applications. By moving and growing our operations in Bowmanville, we are improving efficiency, enhancing competitiveness, and creating skilled jobs that will support Ontario’s manufacturing sector and essential environmental infrastructure for years to come.”

Ontario is investing over $230 million through its Regional Development Program to help manufacturers across the province grow while supporting distinct regional priorities. To date, Ontario has supported more than 180 projects through the program, leveraging more than $2.6 billion in new investments and helping to create over 5,500 jobs.

QUICK FACTS
